April Tips

Cultural tips for late chrysanthemums

Well,  April is the time when plants are making progress, some plants may not be

making the desired progress, suspicious leaf symptoms may cause concern,

It is always good practice to be carrying a few spares at this stage, and any

plants that are lagging behind or have any other defects should be discarded.

Now that the days are getting longer and the sun is getting strength, you will

be able to increase ventilation to frames and greenhouses, but watch out for frost

at night and cold easterly winds, have some Hessian at hand for protection.

Watch out for greenfly, leaf miner, turn leaves in search for any slugs or small

snails that maybe lurking about, and keep on with your weekly insecticide sprays.

If you are growing Earlies apply a top dressing to your plot.

The more experience growers have there own pet recipes, but the common aim

is to get your plants off to a good start, don't think that a little bit extra will give

you better or bigger plants, you might have impressive plants but not impressive blooms.

Get advice from your local Chrysanthemum Society they will put you on the right road for success, if you would wish to join our Society, we will try and help towards winning ways.

Continue to pot on your Lates up to final potting.

Prepare your standing ground, clean with Jeyes Fluid, 2 tablespoons to the gallon,

secure straining wires between your posts one at the top and one just above pot height.

Spacing should be in the region of 15ins to 18ins between plants and 18ins between rows.

If space permits, always keep each cultivar together, some may have different stopping times

or different types of feed, always keep a record such as stopping times, routine feeds etc.
