CULTURAL TIPS FOR LATE CHRYSANTHEMUM

Well the last two weeks has shown a great improvement in the weather,

The second stop is soon due to most late flowering singles, anemones,

and some second-crown incurves, as laterals reach a length of about 2 to 3 inches

they should be reduced in number to the proposed crop, plus one spare.

Transfer Lates to your standing ground . Their canes must be secured to  the

top straining wire at a height of about 4 feet, and one just above the top of the pot.

I prefer this method because it gives support  to the whole of the plant,

Give plants in double rows ,with rows 2ft, and give yourself a good gangway

to work and water your plants.

Lates in pots must only be watered when they reach a point of need. When the compost

dries it shrinks from the inside of the pot, This is where the pot tapping technique comes in,

A ring means it needs water; a dull sound means that the compost is still moist.

I grow quite a few Late -flowering Sprays, Here we have a chrysanthemum with a

difference and a challenge. One spray can contain round about twenty or more

single or double blooms, Cuttings of these cultivars should be inserted by the end

of the month, If you have never tried then, I am certain when you see an exhibit of

three vases of three in your local show you will want to take up the challenge

of growing these excellent cultivars it is beauty with a difference.

Feeding of  Lates in pots will need to commence in the region of four to five weeks

after final potting. Some growers use liquids, some use powders, There will still be

appreciable nutrient left in the compost, When the roots have run through the pot

they need a gentle feed, over feeding can ruin your plants, We need gentle acceleration

to full size beneath the bud- not oversize, Never exceed the recommended dosage

by the makers, if in doubt ask at your Chrysanthemum  Society.

Try to keep records make note of any worthwhile experiments.

Most of the growers I have been in touch with say their plants are looking good,

and are due for their final stop,

As I understand most cultivars will respond to a shade programme of ten or eleven weeks

similar to late sprays, which is thirteen hours of total darkness , the date to start is determined

by the date of your show, take the date of show, then deduct ten or eleven weeks to give you

a date to start blacking out, I black out my late sprays so I will try one or two spiders as well.

and see what difference it makes.
